It’s Special Olympics Awareness Month

June 22, 2016

Welcome to June, and our new monthly charitable focus: Special Olympics Awareness Month! Now a global entity with presence in over 220 countries, the Special Olympics started as a backyard summer camp for people with intellectual disabilities in the 1950s and early 1960s. Eunice Kennedy Shriver found it troubling that people with disabilities were treated unfairly, and often didn’t have a place where they could play. She launched a summer day camp in her backyard, designed to help young people with disabilities learn what they could do in sports, and the initiative grew from there.

The first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago, IL, in July 1968. Since then, the organization has evolved into an inspiring and powerful movement that empowers anyone with a disability to participate in a wonderful and supportive community.

Here at Carrington, we wholeheartedly support this wonderful organization, and have a number of events planned in support of the Special Olympics and their Summer Games this month! We’ll be hosting a festival booth June 11-12 at the Long Beach, CA, games. Associates representing several Carrington business units will be there to support the athletes and share information about our company and what we do with potential Carrington customers. And Carrington’s Connecticut offices, Windsor and Greenwich, will be combining forces to volunteer at the Special Olympics Connecticut at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT, on June 11.
