May is Special Olympics Awareness Month

June 01, 2015

This May Carrington Charitable Foundation is raising awareness for the Special Olympics and the work they do to transform the lives of those with intellectual disabilities through the joy of sports. With the Summer Games approaching in Long Beach, California on June 13th & 14th, CCF is proud to support the Special Olympics again this year with a $5,000 sponsorship and will hold a game booth at the two-day event manned by our Carrington volunteers.

The Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities, with 4.4 million athletes in 170 countries. This global movement helps these athletes discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success. Through various sporting events, the athletes find joy, confidence and fulfillment on the playing field and in life. They also inspire people in their communities and elsewhere to open their hearts to a wider world of human talents and potential.

For more than 43 years, the Special Olympics has been spreading the message that people with intellectual disabilities can – and will – succeed when given the chance. With training and competitions in 32 Olympic-style sports, the athletes strive to beat their personal bests, defying the odds again and again. From the local ballfields to the shining stage of the World Games, from swimming to snowboarding, the athletes showcase their talents and triumphs.
