Purple Rain Reigns for Lupus Walk

May 16, 2016

Jameelah Johnson-Kahn, HRD Processor for Carrington Mortgage Services, has joined the Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now! event in Irvine, CA, on Saturday, June 4! Jameelah has created a team fundraising site for those who would like to join her in her quest, or donate to the cause.

Jameelah’s reason for walking is very personal, as she’s currently suffering from lupus, and has been fighting the disease for the past 11 years. Lupus is hereditary, and Jameelah says she lost her uncle to the disease. “You never know about a disease until it hits home,” she says. “With lupus, we may look good on the outside, but on the inside our body is our own enemy.” Jameelah resolves never to give up. She says, “We don’t know how strong we are until being strong is the only choice we have.”

Although lupus is an autoimmune disease that can affect anyone at any time, it most commonly strikes women, who account for 90% of the 1.5 million people currently diagnosed with lupus. It’s a highly unpredictable disease that damages organs or tissues, and can affect the skin, joints, the kidneys and even the heart. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has only developed and approved one drug to treat lupus; and as of now, there is no cure.
