Project Smiley Update

The future home of U.S. Army Major Scott Smiley and his wife, Tiffany Smiley, is just in the early stages, but CCF has purchased the land and begun drilling the well for their future home. Scott Smiley, a Ranger and combat-diver-qualified infantryman, is the Army’s first active-duty, blind officer and the first blind company commander. On April 6, 2005, he lost the use of both eyes when a suicide car bomber blew himself up thirty meters in front of Scott’s Stryker vehicle. Since that day, Scott has surfed in Hawaii, skied in Vail, skydived, climbed Mount Rainier, completed a triathlon and graduated from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business with his MBA.

Scott was decorated with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, was named “Soldier of the Year” in 2007 by The Army Times, and was honored with the 2008 ESPY Award as the World’s Best Outdoor Athlete. He continues to speak publicly to corporations, educators and church groups, sharing his message of optimism and perseverance. Scott tells the story of how blindness became his journey of supreme testing in his book, Hope Unseen, published in 2010.

His wife Tiffany is a registered nurse who enjoys spending time with Scott and their three boys, Grady, Graham and Baylor. Since Scott’s injury, Tiffany has not only worked to support their family and Scott during his recovery, but also helped Scott build his own business and worked on “Beat Feet,” a documentary about Scott’s journey to the Ironman. Scott and Tiffany have been guests at our Annual Golf Classic for the past three years, and have become very much a part of our Carrington family.
